Beginning with visible features rather than assumptions about date or use
My record of circular jade objects comes from exhibition images and visual observation, not laboratory analysis. I can begin by describing form, opening, perforation, surface colour, edges, and visible working traces. A photograph alone cannot establish the source of the stone, the date of manufacture, or a precise function. Separating what I can see from what it may mean helps prevent an attractive object from being assigned a ritual or status interpretation too quickly.
