Case record
What I did—and what I cannot claim from it.

A small bone fragment exposed in a section
During an observation at an archaeological site, I noticed a small piece of bone exposed in a soil section. Its form reminded me of a human toe bone, but I could not establish whether it was human, determine its date, or explain its relationship to the feature. I handed the material to a professor from the archaeological institute for professional assessment and handling. I do not have confirmed information that can be published about a subsequent identification, so I continue to describe it cautiously as a fragment resembling a human toe bone.

The important lesson was the limit of identification and the value of context
The experience taught me that saying what something resembles is only the beginning of observation, not a conclusion. Determining whether bone is human or animal, identifying the anatomical element, establishing whether it is contemporary with the layer, and assessing later movement all require professional examination and contextual records. The position of the material matters as much as the material itself; once its relationship to the section is lost, some interpretive information may disappear. If I encounter similar material again, I would first notify the person responsible for the site and follow professional instructions before any unnecessary movement.

Restraint is part of professional conduct around human remains
Possible human remains should not be turned into a sensational story, a personal possession, or a display prop. They may belong to a particular person who once lived, so documentation, care, and presentation require respect. Handing the material to the professor was the most important action in this experience. It showed me that archaeological ability is not only the ability to notice and identify. It also includes stating uncertainty clearly and leaving specialist decisions to people with the appropriate knowledge and responsibility.
